The Brewing and Distilling BSc (Hons) course at Heriot-Watt University is organized in partnership with senior representatives of the malting, brewing and distilling industries who are members of the International Center for Distilling and Brewing Education Board. It is designed to educate potential managers of the malting, cooking and distilling industries and to provide a complete understanding of the science and technology of processes involved from grain farming to bottling and packaging. The holistic approach to learning and teaching is a learner-centered approach, designed to encourage students to become more committed to their learning and development as the program progresses. The skills required for this program are developed through lectures, tutorials, coursework (assignments, individual projects, group projects, essays, reports, presentations, posters and qualifications) self-study, business project and research project. The laboratory-based materials of the program (planned classes and research project), work on experimental plants, industrial visits and placements work to strengthen the development of specific subject-specific skills. The active part of this program, which works in pilot malting's, brewery and distillery strengthens the theory and promotes team performance as a member of a small group.
The program testing policy includes various types of testing. Constructive evaluation and other offerings are designed to provide feedback on performance and are used to inform progress. Study activity (continuous assessment) during lessons and assessment collected at the end of both studies contribute to the overall assessment and is used to measure success in a particular learning achievement. Heriot-Watt has an outstanding reputation in Brewing and Distilling, with students at the forefront of the ever-changing industry. The International Center for program was established in 90s and provides a strong partnership between education and industry, ensuring that our graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to perform successful work. Our graduates are employed in a variety of ways, from plant managers and operators to marketing and sales. Many are at the forefront of innovation, introducing new breweries and breweries as well as senior positions in established companies.
