Overview
American University is a methodist-affiliated institution recognized by Congress in 1893. AU was created as a response to George Washington's call to create a national university in the nation's capital, Washington DC. American University was designed to train public servants to become a beacon of hope for the future, a vision it still maintains to this day.
AU caters to more than 14,000 undergraduate, graduate, and law students, providing quality education to help students flourish in their respective fields.

Student life
At AU, student development and support is considered a top priority, which is why they offer a lot of services such as:
- Centre for Student Belonging: for minorities and individuals with different life experiences.
- Centre for Student Involvement: that caters to fraternities, sororities, student clubs and student government. This helps provide a sense of community in students and encourages deeper bonds.
- Center for Leadership & Community Engagement: that encourages students to integrate themselves in the community and give back to it. Mostly revolve around opportunities like tutoring and volunteer work.
- Kay Spiritual Life Centre: This student centre is centered around providing a common place for people who belong to various faith communities.
- Housing & Residence Life: AU helps students find a place they can call home. They provide options for summer housing for students who need to stay on campus for the summer.
- University Centers and Clubs: they help students socialize and enroll in various clubs. They are a resource for student organizations in planning for events as well

Among AU’s extensive roster of impressive alumni are Lonnie Bunch, who served as the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Mong-Yong Chung who is the chairman of Hyundai Sungwoo Buildings, and Susan Zirinksy, President of See It Now Studios.
