Step by Step Visa Application Process

  1. Choose a course and institution

Students must start by selecting a course of their interest. Make sure that the institution is a New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) approved provider. Students who are enrolled in an approved program are eligible for a student visa.

  1. Apply and receive an offer of place

After applying directly to the chosen university, you will receive an Offer Letter which will include your enrollment, course details, start/end dates, and tuition fees.

  1. Prepare visa documents

All the documents required including your passport, offer letter, academic transcripts, proof of funds, medical insurance, and police certificate (if applicable). All documents must be in English or translation must be required if otherwise.

  1. Submit visa application (online or paper-based)

Application can be done through the Immigration New Zealand (INZ) website online or paper-based through the nearest visa application center (VAC). However, online applications are preferred as they are faster and more convenient.

  1. Medical and biometrics

A medical examination may be required, as well as biometric information such as fingerprints and photographs. INZ will let you know if this is required, and it must be done through VACs.

  1. Visa decision

Next, your application is reviewed by INZ and they make their decision. In most cases, they tend to give a ‘visa approval in principle’ (AIP) which means your visa is approved conditionally. .

  1. Pay full tuition

If the applicant receives the AIP, they must pay the full tuition fee for the first semester. INZ will proceed with final visa issuance after the institution confirms receipt of payment.

  1. Get visa label/eVisa

The final step includes receiving your student visa, either as a physical label in your passport or as an eVisa through email.

Visa Processing Time

The average processing time for a New Zealand study visa is 4-8 weeks. However, delays can occur due to multiple reasons such as document verification, medical checkups or high amounts of applications. To avoid delays on your end, students are strongly advised to start the visa process at least 3-4 months before your course intake. Planning early will give you enough time to prepare your documents, payment of tuition fee, and travel arrangements.

English Language Requirements

  • All Pakistani students must meet the English language proficiency criteria set by their education provider and INZ.

  • The most common test for this is IELTS, which requires scores between 5.5-6.5 depending on the level of study.

  • New Zealand also accepts other alternatives such as TOEFL whose score range depends on the program you are opting for.

  • PTE is also accepted whose score ranges 50-58 + for undergraduate and 56-65 + for postgraduate.

  • Students must confirm the score requirement from their chosen university.

  • If you have previously studied from a school or university whose medium of instruction is English, your institution may waive the English test requirement. A Medium of Instruction (MOI) from the previous institution will be provided in such cases.

Common Reasons for Visa Rejection

Understanding the common reasons behind refusal of a New Zealand study visa can help avoid mistakes. Some of these common reasons are:

  • Failing to show proof of the required finances for tuition and accommodation or being unclear about the source of income.

  • Documents such as bank statements, academic records or sponsor affidavits might be missing which can result in visa delays or rejection.

  • The immigration officers might not be convinced that the students main purpose is education.

  • If the student’s SOP is weak or generic, and does not clearly explain their goals and future plans, the visa might get rejected.

  • Your application may seem inconsistent if the course you have chosen is different from your academic background and career path.
