Studying geography in Heriot-Watt includes geography, visual geography, social policy, economics and modern studies. It incorporates the theory and work taken from these key learning areas to create exciting and elaborate university degrees. This Geography BSc focuses on visual geography, learning about processes that make up the natural environment including hydrology, geology and geomorphology. You will improve field service skills in exploring, mapping and site exploration with field service and site visits as a key element in your learning. You will develop valuable research skills through basic mathematical modules, data analysis and research methods that you will use in your final year of research. Throughout your degrees of discipline and problem-solving practice helps students acquire the skills needed to work on various disciplinary teams and solve real-world problems.
The program aims to provide a comprehensive education of the world, with a focus on physical geoscience, but with a consistent foundation in human geographic concepts. The program is structured around key themes of: national history and people; urban geography; hydrosphere (rivers and seas); geosphere; space; natural hazards / hazards and related policy. These themes are developed over 4 years of study, providing graduates with useful skills in current environmental fields. In particular, graduates will gain an understanding of processes and change; human-body interactions with system framework processes. The importance of local and temporary relationships / diversity.
You can take part in field service tours for years 1, 2 and 3 - places to visit in Scotland, UK and more, as well as short one-day trips and site visits. This tour provides important opportunities to deepen practical skills in field exploration, site viewing, data collection and analysis. You can find links to industry and industry - hear from visiting speakers and professionals who work as landlords, inspectors and editors. In the 3rd year, all students are given the opportunity to be trained by a doctor, an industrialist who can discuss career decisions, job opportunities to graduate and professional career paths.
