Public Health is the art and science of valuing human health by informing healthy people, places and policies. Public Health improves the quality of health and wellbeing by working to prevent disease, extend health, and promote health by analyzing science and producing solutions to problems. The University of Wollongong Bachelor of Information Science (Public Health) is laying a common ground for the compulsory social science courses in the first year, followed by a major in Public Health. By the third year, you will have the opportunity to engage in integrated learning, where you will gain valuable public information. You will complete your degree and a small amount of study space from any field that offers registration. You can also study foreign options, or stay in the area and work on building your communication skills across cultures.
Basic courses in the social sciences include public health, psychology, the human condition and mathematics as well as the ability of different materials. In your second and third years you will focus on the social determinants of health. You will study health such as personal information, local and international, and health issues such as life expectancy, the effects of stress, early childhood development, illness, social exclusion, and unemployment. You will learn how to critically evaluate people and their situations to find problems and to solve them.
As employers increasingly seek out people with advanced generic skills, in addition to professional skills, the Bachelor of Social Science strongly prepares students for professional work after graduation. In addition, the combined focus on general skills and fine-tuned knowledge and skills within this grade equips students with a lifelong process of personal development. Graduate care opportunities include a child protection officer, community health worker, support staff. Among other opportunities, graduates can find work in government departments including Trade and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Australian Border Force, the Ministry of Defense and the Attorney General's office.
