The main purpose of pharmacy care is to effectively optimise positive healthcare outcomes and allow patients’ to lead a high quality of life with minimum risk. The first year of this course focuses on the foundations of biochemistry, physiology and pharmacy practice, along with interprofessional healthcare where you can collaborate with students from other health science degrees. In the preceding years, the course entails pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, antimicrobial chemotherapy, pharmacology and pharmacotherapy, all of which will work to develop your practical skills further. During the course, you will be required to complete a minimum of 12 weeks (450+ hours) of clinical placements, which you can take interstate or overseas in hospitals, the community or in industry. After graduation, you will successfully need to complete an internship of 1,824 hours (approximately one year full-time) prior to applying as a pharmacist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
