Dabei scheint es angebracht zu sein, sich einer Wertung der Medieninhalte zu enthalten, da dies lediglich einem Vergleich der einen Konstruktion von Realität mit einer anderen gleichkäme. Dennoch bzw. gerade deswegen lässt sich die Funktionsweise der Medien aus der Betrachterposition des Beobachters zweiter Ordnung besser handhaben. Jenseits von Moralisierungen lässt sich nach negativen und positiven Folgen für das Wissen der Gesellschaft fragen, die sich durch die artwork und Weise, wie Medien info verbreiten, ergeben.

Die Arbeit folgt der theoretischen Konzeption der Massenmedien, die durch Niklas Luhmann
vorgelegt wurde. Ich werde dabei zunächst die Vorannahmen des operativen Konstruktivismus erläutern, die zu der oben erwähnten Beobachterposition zweiter Ordnung führen. Dabei ist insbesondere der Grundbegriff des Beobachtens von Bedeutung. Auf diesen Vorannahmen aufbauend, stelle ich die Grundkonzeption der Massenmedien dar, die einigen Grundunterscheidungen wie Selbst- und Fremdreferenz folgt, sowie weitere Aufteilungen in Codes und Programmen. Hier finden sich die Begriffe wie info und Nichtinformation sowie die Aufteilung in Nachrichten, Berichte, Unterhaltung und Werbung wieder. Weiterhin erläutere ich am Beispiel des Programmbereichs „Nachrichten“, wie sich Auswirkungen der Selektionsweise der Medien auf die Gesellschaft verstehen lassen. Die Realitätskonstruktion der Massenmedien ist dabei eine Folge, die sich aus der bestimmten Weise der Erzeugung von Identität und der Einbeziehung von Schemata in das soziale Gedächtnis ergeben.
Abschließend ergibt sich noch die Frage nach strukturellen Kopplungen des Mediensystems mit anderen Systemen der Gesellschaft. Luhmann sieht klare Kopplungen mit dem politischen und dem wirtschaftlichen Funktionssystemen, jedoch nur eine geringe Kopplung mit dem Wissenschaftssystem. Einiges scheint jedoch für eine Kopplung zu sprechen.
